Why a Simple 3 Step Skincare Routine Outperforms a Complicated One
If you’ve been searching for a simple 3 step skincare routine, you’ve likely been met with the opposite. Twelve-step guides. Seventeen products. A serum for morning, a different one for evening, an essence before the toner, an oil after the moisturiser.
For some people, that complexity is a joy. But for many, it’s quietly become another thing on the list, something to get through rather than something to look forward to.
We built Luna Selene around a different idea. That a 3-step ritual, done consistently with the right ingredients, is genuinely enough. Not a compromise. Not a starting point for something more elaborate. Enough.
Why a Simple 3 Step Skincare Routine Outperforms a Complicated One
The skincare industry has a vested interest in convincing you that your skin needs more, more products, more actives, more intervention. And while there are skin concerns that benefit from targeted treatment, the foundation of healthy skin is far simpler than most product ranges suggest.
Skin needs three things from a daily ritual: to be properly cleansed, balanced, and nourished with actives that address its specific concerns. Everything else is optional.
Adding more products doesn’t automatically improve results. In fact, layering too many actives can overwhelm the skin barrier, cause sensitivity, and ironically undo some of what your best products are trying to do. Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology supports the idea that a disrupted skin barrier is one of the most common causes of reactive, sensitive skin, often caused by over-cleansing and over-exfoliation rather than under-treating.
Step One: Cleanse Properly, and Gently
The first step isn’t just about removing makeup. It’s about preparing a clean surface for everything that follows.
A cleanser that strips the skin, leaving it tight, dry, or slightly reactive, starts the ritual on the wrong foot. Whatever you apply afterwards has to work harder to compensate for a compromised barrier.
Our Alpha Glow Botanical Cleansing Balm was formulated with this in mind. A blend of Shea Butter, Grape Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, and Lemon Peel Oil, it melts away makeup, SPF, and daily grime without disturbing the skin’s natural balance. You finish the first step feeling cleansed and nourished, not depleted.
Step Two: Tone to Prep, Not Strip
Toning has a complicated reputation, largely because older toners were astringent and harsh. A good modern toner does something quite different: it balances the skin’s pH after cleansing and prepares it to absorb what comes next far more effectively.
This step is often skipped, and it shows. A serum applied to skin that hasn’t been prepped simply doesn’t absorb as well. The results are slower, less visible, and easy to misattribute to the serum itself.
Our Lunar Radiance Citrus Toning Elixir combines Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, Orange Oil, and Neroli Oil, hydrating and brightening in equal measure. It settles the skin after cleansing and creates the ideal surface for treatment to follow. The result is that subtle glow that people tend to notice without being able to place.
Step Three: Treat Where the Real Work Happens
The third step is where you address what matters most to your skin. Dark spots, fine lines, dullness, dehydration: this is the moment for an active serum that works with your skin’s natural processes rather than forcing change.
Our Lacus Temporis Pro Collagen Boosting Serum is the heart of the Luna Selene ritual. Formulated with 5% Niacinamide to brighten and support the skin barrier, 3% Tranexamic Acid to target hyperpigmentation at the source, Hyaluronic Acid for deep hydration, and our Toniq postbiotic (a Saccharomyces Barley Seed Ferment Filtrate upcycled from the gin industry), it addresses multiple concerns in a single, considered step.
It’s award-winning, 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and made in the UK.
Why Consistency Beats Complexity
The most effective ritual is the one you actually do.
A ten-step ritual abandoned after a week delivers nothing. A three-step ritual done every evening, consistently, for months is where visible change happens. Most active ingredients need 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use to show their full effect. That timeline only works if the ritual is simple enough to maintain.
There’s also something to be said for the quality of the experience itself. Three steps, done slowly and intentionally, can feel like a genuine pause in the day. A moment that’s entirely yours. That’s not a small thing.
Morning or Evening: When Should You Do Your 3-Step Ritual?
For most people, the evening is where this ritual does its best work. Your skin repairs and regenerates overnight, which means it’s more receptive to active ingredients in the hours before sleep. Cleansing away the day’s makeup, SPF, and pollution also means your skin isn’t spending the night with that layer still sitting on it.
That said, a simplified version in the morning, cleanse gently, tone, and apply your serum before SPF, makes a real difference to how skin holds up throughout the day. Niacinamide and Tranexamic Acid are both stable in daylight and work well in a morning ritual alongside sun protection.
If you only do one, make it the evening. Your skin will thank you for it.
